Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of mnemonic-based strategies on the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 21 Palembang. Speaking remains a major challenge due to limited vocabulary, low confidence, and lack of fluency in expressing ideas. This study employed a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: an experimental group and a control group, with a total of 60 students. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test speaking assessments. The results showed that the experimental group achieved greater improvement than the control group. The mean score of the experimental group increased from 65.2 to 80.5, while the control group improved from 64.8 to 70.1. These findings indicate that mnemonic-based strategies are effective in improving students’ speaking skills and contribute positively to English language learning.
